Getting Started
What is GuitarMap?
GuitarMap is a web app that uses AI to transcribe guitar audio into interactive tablature. Upload audio, video, or paste a YouTube URL — GuitarMap isolates the guitar, transcribes every note, and displays it on an animated fretboard synced to your audio or video.
How do I transcribe a song?
Click "New Transcription" from your dashboard, then drag and drop an audio file, upload a video, or paste a YouTube URL. GuitarMap automatically isolates the guitar and transcribes it.
What formats are supported?
Audio: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A (up to 50MB). Video: MP4, MOV, WEBM (auto-compressed to 720p). YouTube URL extraction is available on Pro and Studio plans.
Can I use YouTube URLs?
Yes — paste any public YouTube URL and GuitarMap extracts the audio automatically. If the video is embeddable, you also get video sync so you can watch the performance alongside the fretboard.
Transcription
How accurate is the AI transcription?
GuitarMap runs a proprietary ML pipeline tuned for guitar — pitch detection, string and fret mapping, and articulation inference. Accuracy varies with audio quality: clean solo recordings work best, and you can edit any notes the AI gets wrong.
How long does transcription take?
Solo guitar recordings transcribe in under 30 seconds. Full band mixes take about 1-2 minutes because the guitar isolation step runs first. You'll see a multi-step progress indicator the whole time.
Does it work with acoustic guitar? Electric? Classical?
Yes to all three. GuitarMap is optimized for standard 6-string guitar in standard tuning (E A D G B E). It works with any guitar type — electric, acoustic, or classical.
What if the song has multiple instruments?
GuitarMap automatically detects full band mixes and isolates the guitar track before transcribing. This dramatically improves accuracy. You can also toggle guitar isolation on or off manually.
Does it detect articulations (bends, slides, etc.)?
Yes. GuitarMap detects bends, slides, vibrato, hammer-ons, and pull-offs. These are displayed as visual indicators on the fretboard during playback.
Editing & Export
Can I edit the generated tabs?
Absolutely. Click any note to select it, then adjust the string, fret, or timing. You can also add or remove notes. All edits are saved automatically.
What export formats are available?
You can export as ASCII tab (plain text), PDF (formatted sheet), or MIDI (for Guitar Pro, DAWs, etc.).
Can I share my tabs with others?
Tab sharing is on our roadmap. For now, you can export your tabs and share the files directly.
Account & Billing
Is there a free tier?
Yes. The free tier gives you 3 transcriptions per month with up to 2-minute audio files. No credit card required.
How do I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
Go to Settings → Billing in your dashboard. You can switch plans at any time through the Stripe billing portal.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel anytime through the billing portal. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) through Stripe. Apple Pay and Google Pay are also supported.
Troubleshooting
The transcription doesn't look right — what can I do?
First, make sure guitar isolation is enabled (the "Isolate" button in the controls bar). You can also try re-transcribing with a different sensitivity setting, or edit individual notes directly in the tab editor.
Audio upload failed — what should I check?
Make sure your file is under 50MB and in a supported format (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A). If you're using a YouTube URL, ensure the video is public and not geo-restricted.
The fretboard isn't loading — how do I fix it?
The fretboard uses HTML Canvas, which requires a modern browser. Try refreshing the page, or switch to Chrome/Firefox/Edge if you're on an older browser. Make sure hardware acceleration is enabled.
